When your child needs clarity, confidence and real understanding: Welcome to Get Set Maths

At Get Set Maths, I specialise in helping children move from confusion to complete confidence in maths. With over two decades of classroom experience as an accredited Maths Recovery teacher and former Principal Teacher of Pedagogy, I combine research-informed methods with a compassionate, child-centred approach.
The result? Transformed attitudes, renewed confidence, and children who finally believe they can do maths.

The Get Set Maths Way: Our Teaching Philosophy
Great maths teaching isn't about moving faster, it's about building solid foundations. Our approach is built on:
A deep understanding of how children make sense of numbers and where confusion takes root
Proven, research-based strategies that develop genuine mathematical thinking
Flexible learning formats: join live group sessions with personalised marking and on-call feedback, or choose self-paced study where your child works at their own speed
A commitment to restoring confidence, curiosity and a sense of "I can do this"

Is Get Set Maths right for your child?
You're in the right place if your child:
Feels anxious, stuck or overwhelmed when it comes to maths
Needs concepts broken down visually and explained with patience and clarity
Has been working hard but still isn't making the progress they deserve
Has started to believe they're "just not good at maths" and needs to rediscover what they're capable of
Hi, I'm Gillian Marr...
I am an accredited Maths Recovery teacher and former Principal Teacher of Pedagogy with over twenty three years of experience teaching across all stages in primary school. At Repton School Dubai, one of the UAE's outstanding schools, I was a specialist maths teacher for Years 5 and 6 and was recognised as an outstanding practitioner during both inspections in my time there. Having the opportunity to work with secondary colleagues as part of the East Lothian Pedagogy team gave me valuable insight into the difficulties children face when they move up to secondary school. I now know exactly which areas children need to build confidence in so that they can succeed at secondary level.
I am considered a patient and empathetic tutor who creates a calm, supportive environment where every child feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes and discover that they are more capable than they thought. I work hard to build trust and mutual respect, so that learning feels achievable, and even enjoyable. Because ultimately, I'm on a mission to get more children not just understanding maths, but actually liking it.

What people say…

After just four weeks of fun, interactive sessions, she’s not only understanding fractions, she’s enjoying them! Her confidence has soared, and she recently scored 100% in a fractions test. She’s feeling positive and is already looking forward to the next block of sessions. I’d highly recommend Gill to any parent looking for a tutor who brings warmth, creativity and real expertise to maths learning.

When Isabel went into Gillian’s class she was not confident in doing maths and felt very unsure about the subject. Gillian turned that around completely. I am not sure how she did it but Gillian got Isabel really excited in maths. Now she is in high school it is her favourite subject and she will often say that she loves the logic in maths. She has now chosen to do Higher!

Gillian is a fantastic maths tutor whose passion for the subject truly shines through. She has a wonderful way of making maths fun and accessible, using creative approaches like games and rhymes to help children grasp and remember key concepts. My daughter has not only improved her understanding of maths but now actually enjoys it, thanks to Gillian's engaging and thoughtful teaching style. I highly recommend her!
